A very old Press Kit video for the release of De La Soul’s 3 Feet High & Rising album (which was, in my humble opinion, a true masterpiece). Cool stuff.
More oldskool shizzle: an early gig of the Beastie Boys, in 1983. The girl on the drums is Kate Schellenbach - the fourth Beastie.

Great song! Sampled a zillion times.
(thanks Tom for finding this tune)

Tom refreshed our minds with this great eighties classic, Street Dance.

A: I’m sorry son, but we don’t have it!

Everytime I start up the program Adobe Bridge, I think of MC Shan’s oldskool hiphop song “The Bridge”. This song started The Bridge Wars during the eighties, with Boogie Down Productions leading the revolt. Some audio/video from back in the days:
Hip hop was set out in the dark
The Bridge was never Over, we left our mark

Hey Róisín!
I know I said we would get together and visit the Filmfestival in Ghent, but darling, things are quite hectic at the office right now. We still have lots of work for the Pioneer Kuro campaign and we’re in the middle of this big Microsoft thing. It involves a huge lightning installation overpowered with a total of 5670 Watt! More details soon…
Anyway, I just want you to know that A: you look smashing! and B: I love your new album!
Hush hush & see you soon,
R.

Paul’s Boutique (1989, perhaps the best Beasties album ever) has this great song called “Shadrach, Mesach & Abednago”. Ages ago I saw the clip on MTV. It was also the last time I saw it. Apparently that clip had an airtime of zero. Thanks to YouTube, we don’t need MTV anymore.
Just take a look at this clip and be amazed by the energy it reflects. They used footage of a live performance, traced it over frame by frame and handpainted it to create that animation effect. Tons of work! Oldskool in effect!

The Blue Note Records Festival in Ghent started last week (6th of July > 17th of July). Great lineup, although a bit prizy. But what strikes me the most is the fact that everyone is so concerned about that whole Shadow thing… “Hey, are you going to see Shadow?”. “Hey, you got your tickets for Shadow?”. Well, no! I don’t have tickets for Shadow. And no I’m not going to see Shadow. I saw Mr. Shadow 15 years ago in De Vooruit. The room was empty (this was an early Mo’Wax gig, people weren’t ready yet). Don’t get me wrong here, I love Shadow. Entroducing was groundbreaking!
But it seems that everyone is missing out that other great name on the list. I’m talking about Sly “The-Living-Legend” Stone. I’m talking about Sly “Hello-we-played-at-Woodstock-in-69-And-I-Bet-You-Weren’t-Even-Born-Back-Than” Stone. Well, I’ve got my eye on you, Stone! Let’s hope he makes it to Ghent. There’s a slight chance The Funkster Himself might miss the gig, refuse to play, or pass out from drug use… But I guess the 27 euros are worth the risk!
